The Story of The Peace Candle
The Peace Candle is a gift from the congregation of the Good Shepherd in Beijing, China via Cheri Pinner to the congregation of St Luke's, as a symbol of peace.
The Peace Candle had its birth when an American clergyman was visiting a Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow. An elderly Russian lady took a three ruble note and thrust it in his hand, with the request that he would light a candle in his home church and pray for peace.
From there, peace candles have spread through many churchs. Beijing's own candle began in a church in England, was sent on to a church in Australia and then to New Zealand, before coming to Beijing. A special prayer for peace is given by a different member of the Congregation of the Good Shepherd, Beijing, every week. That congregation gives a peace candle to every member who leaves, that they will take the candle to their next or home parish in the hope that this dedication to pray for peace will spread to other churches throughout the world
The Beijing candle was designed especially for Good Shepherd, Beijing by Christian Woodcarvers of Dong Yang, Zhejiang Province. They chose the lily as a reminder that world peace begins in our own hearts when we are filled with the peace of Christ.
It is truly an international passing of the peace.
